Last month, I spent several days at my wonderful friend Dave's house. On the wall of his room, he'd hung up this Sufi prayer:

Shatter my heart so new room can be created for limitless love.

There are so many different ways to break a heart, but they all boil down to lost trust. I've always given trust freely, in many cases far more freely than the situation called for. And for all the times I've had my heart broken, or the times I've broken other hearts, here it is. To me, it's what life and love and friendship are all about. And so no matter what happens, and for all the times past and future that my trust or my heart may be broken, I pray that I will never grow too cold or fearful to put myself out in the middle of this great big scary old world, and try again.
